Loft controls how high and how far the ball launches. Slower swings need more loft to get the ball airborne and carry it, faster swings can afford less loft because they generate launch and low spin naturally. Match yours to the chart below as a starting point.

What actually drives the decision
- Angle of attack matters as much as speed. If you hit up on the ball you can play less loft. If you hit down, which most amateurs do, you need more loft to launch it properly.
- More loft can straighten a slice. Higher loft adds backspin, which reduces the side spin that curves the ball, so your misses tend to be less severe.
- 10.5° is the sensible default. It fits the widest band of swing speeds, roughly 85 to 100 mph, which is where most golfers live.
- Adjustable heads give you room. Many modern drivers let you move loft up or down a degree or two, so you can dial it in without buying again.
