Average distances by skill level
These are rough carry distances for male amateur golfers, in yards. Women's distances typically run lower, with an average driver carry around 150 to 175 yards. Use these as a guide, not a target to force.

Carry distance, not total distance
Notice these are carry numbers, how far the ball flies before it lands, not total distance with roll. That distinction matters more than most golfers realise. If your 7-iron carries 150 but you club off a total distance of 160, you will come up short every time you need to fly the ball onto a green or over a bunker. - Consistent gaps beat raw distance. Even spacing between clubs matters more than squeezing out extra yards.
- Averages, not your best. Club off the shot you hit most of the time, not the one perfect strike you remember.
