Flex is how much the shaft bends through your swing. Too stiff and you lose launch and distance and tend to miss right. Too soft and the ball balloons and you fight a left miss. Swing speed gets you into the right category, then tempo fine-tunes it.

- Irons swing slower than your driver. A 7-iron typically runs 15 to 20 mph below driver speed, so fit irons off their own numbers, not your driver alone.
- Tempo breaks ties. A smooth 95 mph swinger often plays better in Regular. A hard, quick transition at 90 mph may need Stiff to stop the face staying open.
- Flex is not standardised across brands. A Stiff in one shaft can feel like a Regular in another, so treat the label as a starting point, not a guarantee.
- When in doubt, go one softer. Most recreational golfers score better slightly under-flexed than over-flexed.
