Can You Play Them?Public Access vs Private Members Clubs
Half of this list is genuinely open to visiting golfers, the other half is not, which matters more than the ranking itself if you're planning a trip.
Public or resort access: Barnbougle Dunes, Barnbougle Lost Farm, Cape Wickham, St Andrews Beach and 7 Mile Beach all take paying visitors, most as part of a stay-and-play package on Tasmania's north coast or King Island.
Private members clubs: Royal Melbourne (both courses), Kingston Heath, Victoria Golf Club and New South Wales Golf Club are private. Access is generally limited to members, reciprocal club arrangements, or accredited golf tour operators who hold standing bookings, so a spontaneous visit usually isn't possible.
The SandbeltWhy Melbourne's Sandbelt Dominates
Five of the ten courses on this list sit within about 40 minutes of central Melbourne, on the sand-based soil belt that gives the region its name. The free-draining sand allows firm, fast fairways and the deep, dramatic bunkering the Sandbelt is famous for, conditions that are difficult to replicate anywhere else in the country. Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Victoria Golf Club and St Andrews Beach all sit on it, and it's a big part of why Melbourne is considered one of the great golf cities in the world alongside places like Pinehurst and St Andrews.
Tasmania's four entries tell a different story: a genuine links-golf boom over the last two decades, with Barnbougle Dunes in 2004 kicking off a run of world-class development that continues today with 7 Mile Beach opening as recently as December 2024.
