Wedge bounce, explained
Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. More bounce helps the club skid across the ground instead of digging in. The right amount depends on your turf and how steeply you swing.

Where grind comes in
Grind is the shaping of the sole, where material is removed from the heel, toe or trailing edge to change how the club sits and slides. Two wedges with the same bounce number can play very differently depending on grind.
- Grind fine-tunes turf interaction. Heel and toe relief lets you open the face for higher, softer shots without the sole lifting the leading edge off the ground.
- Letters differ by brand. Each manufacturer uses its own grind codes, so treat the letter as a clue to sole width and relief rather than a universal standard.
- Match bounce to your divot. Deep divots mean you want more bounce, little to no divot means low to mid bounce suits you better.
- Match it to your course. Firm, dry summer turf rewards lower bounce, soft winter turf and fluffy bunkers call for more.
- Your sand wedge is the key decision. A forgiving 54° or 56° with mid to high bounce does more for most golfers than a specialist low-bounce lob wedge.
